Dr Mark Gibson

Mark’s technical background includes an honours degree in Biological Sciences at the University of Leicester (1995) and a PhD in Molecular Biology at the University of Sheffield (1998).

Mark entered the patent profession in 1998 with GlaxoSmithKline (GSK) where he gained valuable experience of pharmaceutical related issues. He qualified as a Chartered Patent Attorney in 2002 and a European Patent Attorney in 2003. Mark joined a private practice IP firm in 2004 and became the managing partner of a branch office. Since then, Mark has been involved with providing intellectual property support for a wide variety of clients, ranging from major pharmaceutical companies to sole inventors. Mark joined Sagittarius IP in April 2009 as the managing partner of our Cambridge office.

Mark has particular knowledge of drafting and prosecuting patent applications relating to pharmaceutical compounds, peptides, formulations, biomarkers and diagnostic kits, specialising in pharmaceutical, biotech and chemical inventions. He is experienced in drafting and prosecuting patent applications in a wide variety of countries, as well as in contentious matters such as European oppositions and UK and US litigation.

Dr Scott Goodall

Scott has an MEng degree in Chemical Engineering and Applied Chemistry from Aston University and a DPhil degree in Biochemistry from the University of Oxford. He also has a Postgraduate Certificate in Intellectual Property Law from the University of Manchester.

Scott entered the profession in 2004, qualified as a European Patent Attorney and a Chartered Patent Attorney in 2008 and became a partner in April 2009.

Based in the Marlow office, Scott’s practice includes patent drafting, prosecution and freedom to operate analysis for chemistry, pharmaceutical and biotechnology inventions, with particular emphasis on new chemical entities and vaccines. He has handled a number of SPC applications in the UK and other European territories. Scott also has experience with inventions relating to diagnostics, cosmeceuticals, medical devices and chemical processing apparatus. He is also experienced in undertaking IP due diligence activities relating to product or corporate transactions for life sciences organisations.

Scott is actively involved in IP education and has been a tutor on the JDD training course for the UK FD1 patent attorney examination (Advanced IP Law and Practice, formerly known as ‘P2′) since 2009.

Dr Andrew Teuten - Senior Partner

Andrew is a Natural Sciences graduate from the University of Cambridge, majoring in chemistry, and has a DPhil degree in protein NMR from the University of Oxford. Andrew has spent over 25 years formulating and executing IP strategies in the pharmaceutical industry, having worked in-house in the IP departments of Fisons (now Sanofi Aventis), Astra Pharmaceuticals (now AstraZeneca), Glaxo Wellcome and GlaxoSmithKline prior to founding Sagittarius IP in June 2002.

Andrew has experience in all aspects of chemical, pharmaceutical and biotechnological patent practice including patent drafting, prosecution and enforcement. He has also handled a large number of product and technology acquisitions and divestments, specialising in contract drafting and due diligence activities associated with licence agreements or investments. He has experience of multinational litigation, principally gained in USA, Japan, France, South Africa and the UK, and has particular experience in handling EPO oppositions.

Andrew has an active interest in IP education and training; he is a former member of CIPA’s Education Committee. Andrew is also a member of the Licensing Executives Society (LES).

Elizabeth Aitken

Elizabeth has a BSc honours degree in Biochemistry from the University of Bristol and an MSc in Management of Intellectual Property from Queen Mary, University of London.

Elizabeth joined Sagittarius IP in July 2011 based in our Cambridge office and qualified as a UK and European Patent Attorney in July 2015. She completed CIPA’s Litigation Skills Course in November 2015, and now holds the Intellectual Property Litigation Certificate.

Elizabeth has significant experience in patent drafting and prosecution of biotechnology inventions, as well as contributing in due diligences and freedom to operate searches. She is also currently working two days a week at a major pharmaceutical firm on secondment, where she has gained valuable experience working in-house.

Dr Jessica O'Kane - Associate

Jessica has a first class MChem honours degree in Chemistry and a DPhil in Organic Chemistry from the University of Oxford. Her research focused on the total synthesis of a complex macrocyclic natural product. During her studies, she also spent a summer conducting research in the drug discovery department of a multinational pharmaceutical company. She has completed the Certificate in Intellectual Property Law from Queen Mary, University of London.

Jessica entered the profession in 2009, joining Sagittarius IP in 2012 and is a qualified European Patent Attorney and UK Patent Attorney based in our Marlow office. She completed CIPA’s Litigation Skills Course in November 2015, and now holds the Intellectual Property Litigation Certificate. She is also an Editor of the European Patents Handbook (EPH).

Jessica handles a range of chemical-based subject matter, including small-molecule pharmaceuticals, biocompatible coatings for implantable medical devices and medicinal formulations. She is experienced in all stages of drafting, filing and prosecuting patent applications and IP portfolio management.

Alison Roberts - Consultant

Alison is a Chemistry graduate from Durham University, has an MSc in Medicinal Chemistry from Hull University and is a Chartered Patent Attorney and a European Patent Attorney. She has worked in industry for Reckitt & Colman and Zeneca Agrochemicals (now Syngenta) and also in private practice and has been a consultant since 1996.

Alison has worked in the chemical, pharmaceutical and biotechnological fields and has extensive experience of patent drafting, prosecution and opinion work. She has also worked on oppositions and has provided advice on patent strategy and due diligence for a number of small companies.

Peter Ruscoe - Associate

Peter has a BSc honours degree in Biochemistry from Imperial College London and an MSc in Management of Intellectual Property from Queen Mary, University of London.

Peter entered the profession in 2009 as a trainee Patent Attorney working in-house, and joined Sagittarius IP in 2011, based in the Marlow office. He is a UK and European Patent Attorney and completed CIPA’s Litigation Skills Course in November 2015, and now holds the Intellectual Property Litigation Certificate.

Peter’s practice includes the preparation, filing and prosecution of UK, European and PCT (international) patent applications, freedom to operate analysis and IP due diligence. His cases relate to subject matter spanning many different areas of pharmaceuticals and biotechnology, with a particular focus on vaccines and antibody technology. He has experience of working with clients ranging from small biotechnology firms to large pharmaceutical companies.

Technical Assistants

Dr Alison Kinch

Alison graduated with a first class honours MChem degree in Chemistry from Durham University, which included a year-long industrial placement at a leading pharmaceutical company. She then completed a DPhil in Organic Chemistry at the University of Oxford where her research focused on the total synthesis of marine alkaloid manzamine A, part of which was carried out during a three-month secondment to GlaxoSmithKline. She presented her work at a number of national and international conferences and has published five papers. Alison has completed the Certificate in Intellectual Property Law from Queen Mary, University of London.

Alison joined Sagittarius IP in 2014 as a trainee Patent Attorney in our Marlow office. She is currently working towards the advanced UK and European qualifying exams. Prior to joining Sagittarius IP, Alison worked in the Life Sciences department of a large Technology Transfer firm.

Alison’s work involves filing and prosecution of patent applications in the field of pharmaceuticals, chemicals and medical devices; assisting with due diligence opinions; assisting in oppositions; and providing infringement and patentability advice.

Esmé Swindells

Esmé graduated from Durham University in 2014 with an MChem honours degree in Chemistry.

Esmé joined Sagittarius IP in September 2014 whilst studying for the Postgraduate Certificate in Intellectual Property Law at Brunel University. Having successfully completed the Certificate in IP Law, she is now working towards the advanced qualifying exams.

As a trainee Patent Attorney based in the Marlow office, Esmé works on a variety of cases ranging from vaccines and biotechnology to chemical and pharmaceutical inventions. She is involved in drafting, filing and prosecuting patent applications, as well as providing assistance and support to opposition hearing preparations, freedom to operate searches and IP management.

Patent Administrators

Patricia Clarke

Patricia is based in our Marlow office as a Patent Administrator and is responsible for all aspects of patent formalities relating to the filing, maintenance and general servicing of patents and patent applications for the UK, EP and overseas. She holds the CIPA Certificate in Patent Administration. Prior to joining Sagittarius IP in August 2014, she gained over 15 years of patent experience at a large patent firm in London gaining a wealth of knowledge and experience.

Ruth Cronin

Ruth joined Sagittarius IP in January 2012 to provide all round administrative support to the team. She then began training to become a Patent Administrator and passed the CIPA Certificate in Patent Administration in 2014. Based in the Marlow office Ruth deals with a variety of patent formalities and procedures, including renewal responsibilities.

Susannah Hirst

Susannah joined Sagittarius IP in July 2009 as a Patent Administrator  in the Marlow office and holds the CIPA Certificate in Patent Administration.

Susannah is experienced with all the relevant formalities of the UK Intellectual Property Office, the European Patent Office and WIPO.

Krystina Johl - Acting Head of Administration

Krystina joined Sagittarius IP in March 2010 as a Patent Administrator and holds the CIPA Certificate in Patent Administration. Krystina has over 20 years of experience working in patent administration.

Krystina is based at our Cambridge office and is in charge of handling all aspects of patent formalities there.

Andrea Kallides

Andrea is a Patent Administrator in our Marlow office. She joined Sagittarius IP in September 2014 and holds the CIPA Certificate in Patent Administration.

Maxine Merrigan

maxineMaxine joined Sagittarius IP in January 2016 in our Cambridge office as a Patent Administrator and holds the CIPA Certificate in Patent Administration. Prior to joining Sagittarius, she gained vast experience in various office administration roles, including a Patent Secretary position at a large international patent firm.

Accounts and General Administration

Karen Daffey - Finance Manager

Karen is a qualified ACCA and joined Sagittarius IP in October 2009 based in our Marlow office as a Finance Manager. She is in charge of and looks after all accounts related activities within the company. Before joining Sagittarius IP she was previously employed as a financial controller for a large multinational firm.

David Redgrave

David David joined Sagittarius IP in September 2016 as an accounts assistant based in the Marlow office. Prior to this, David worked in a private practice accountancy firm. He is currently midway through level 4 of his AAT qualification with completion expected in May 2017.
